Multi-Tenant Cloud Platform Modernization
Reworking regulated health-finance systems without disrupting custodial accounting
The Client · The leading HSA and health-finance custodial administration platform

Overview
The client engaged Taller in 2023 for engineering capacity on a multi-year platform modernization. Taller ran multiple pods through 2026, from investment-management delivery to Azure platform engineering, plus embedded Scrum Masters, TPMs, and practice leadership.
The Problem
The client’s HSA platform was a monolith (a single, tightly bound codebase) that needed to be broken into a microservices architecture of small, independent services, without disturbing the strict regulatory rules governing custodial accounting (the client held and administered customers' money, so its books had to be exact). The core constraint: every service that touched money had to defer to one authoritative ledger, or small reconciliation errors compound into large ones. The same rule applied as older, legacy connection methods were gradually replaced with modern REST services (a common, well-supported standard for letting software systems exchange data).
The Solution
Taller engineers contributed across several parts of this modernization. The team delivered the platform’s investment-management features (automated contributions, portfolio rebalancing, curated mutual-fund options, and streamlined tax preparation) alongside the client’s own engineers, migrating the underlying code from the legacy stack to a modern one as part of the broader monolith-to-microservices effort. The 2024–2026 work spanned four areas: converting legacy services to REST APIs; Azure cloud-platform engineering, including cost optimization and self-healing automation (systems that detect and correct their own failures); data engineering; and business-intelligence delivery. Taller also supplied leadership-tier roles (Scrum Masters, Technical Program Managers, and Microsoft Practice Leaders) embedded within the teams across the engagement.
The Impact
The investment-management work delivered stronger portfolio-management capabilities and a markedly better member experience, with streamlined tax preparation emerging as a standout outcome. The team re-engineered both the desktop platform and the mobile app into a single, intuitive investment workspace (consolidating automated document processing, real-time portfolio tracking, and automated asset reallocation into one secure dashboard). These changes simplified complex financial workflows for members while improving operational efficiency and transparency. In parallel, Taller sustained a multi-pod engineering presence from 2023 through 2026 across Identity, API modernization, Plaid integrations, Azure platform engineering, and BI/data engineering, the technical foundation the client’s ongoing product work depended on. At the enterprise level, the multi-year modernization resulted in a significant reduction in service costs and stronger adjusted EBITDA margins than the prior period.
