Overview
A major telecommunications carrier engaged Taller to migrate its integration services from Red Hat Fuse to Camel Quarkus.
The Problem
The client’s integration backbone (the layer allowing its many systems to talk to each other and exchange data) was midway through a multi-stage modernization. It had already moved off a legacy Oracle enterprise service bus (an older style of integration hub) onto Red Hat Fuse services running on OpenShift (a platform for running software in containers). Now it faced a new problem: Red Hat Fuse was approaching end-of-life, the point at which the vendor would stop supporting it. The client needed to move hundreds of integration services onto a modern, cloud-native framework while keeping mission-critical systems reliable throughout. Because that integration layer underpinned application connectivity, data exchange, and operational workflows across the whole enterprise, a botched migration could have meant years of technical debt and serious business disruption.
The Solution
Taller and the client began the migration to Camel Quarkus together, timing it around major release cycles to minimize disruption to live integrations. Camel Quarkus kept the familiar Apache Camel programming model but ran on the modern Quarkus foundation, which used meaningfully less memory and started up faster. The key insight was that a migration like this was about changing the operating model, not just translating code: because Camel Quarkus inherited most of the integration logic (the "route" definitions) from Fuse, the application code carried over with fairly predictable effort, which left the runtime, the monitoring, and the deployment setup as the genuinely hard work. Throughout, keeping OpenShift as the platform held workload orchestration steady across the transition.
The Impact
The migration delivered long-term stability once Red Hat Fuse reached end-of-life, with continuity maintained through the release-aligned migration plan.
